Fighting an unexpected battle

Before we left for Ethiopia I had sent off the application to add the boys to our health insurance.  Given that they are dependents I figured they would be added or at the worst a pre-existing condition might be excluded for a year.  Upon return we learned our health insurance provider wanted more info, so we paid out of pocket to get the necessary doctor appointments and blood test run.  Ezra’s test came back and there was one health concern, but I showed the blood test to an international pediatrician and she said she sees this a lot in international adoptions, so I was not concerned.  Much to our surprise our insurance is denying him coverage completely.

I am blogging this to ask for help, for prayers, for advice.  Has anyone had a similar issue?  How did you fight your battle?  Did you win or lose?  (We are on an individual plan because we are self-employed.)  If you do not want to share your story in the comments section, please email me directly.

I'm assuming it is a chronic lifelong condition requiring care?????? If this is the case, I would try going through your adoption agency for their help/advice. They would have had to deal with this type of situation before....good luck, hope it works out

Argh! Good grief. I absolutely cannot believe your news. How enraging!

We did not experience this with our insurance company at all. They added our twins on with very little hassle. Which..is the way it should be.

I will keep my ears posted about any solutions you may pursue. Hang in there...there has to be an answer here.

It is crazy what insurance companies can do these days! That is just horrible. I wonder what they do when someone gives birth to a child that has a medical issue. It should be no different. I would fight it, or if it comes down to it check into switching insurance companies. I will be praying that you are able to get a quick solution in your favor.

I will ask my mom if she has any idea of what you can do. She works for a health insurance broker. I'll let you know what I find out.

No real advice here, only sympathy. Due to the small family business, we are basically self-employed and also have an individual plan, which, well, sucks. Lots of money for not that great coverage! I really hope that you guys can figure out how to get this worked out-- is the insurance issue a common(ish) problem among internationally adopted children?

Nothing boils my blood more than insurance nonsense. How frustrating this is!
I have prepaid legal....and if I were in your situation I would consult with a lawyer just so I knew what the legal parameters are before challenging or discussing with the insurance. As far as I know when I talked with our insurance, adoption is treated "the same" as a birth when it comes to the child becoming a dependent and they are immediately covered as soon as the adoption is legal. This almost stinks of discrimination.....perhaps (hopefully, most likely?) not racially, but your adopted infant child deserves the same rights as one born to you with any other "complication". I'd fight hard. And frankly, they should reimburse you for the blood tests since they should have been officially added retro to when you passed court.
Email me....I'd be happy to talk more if you want.

That is SO lame! Is that legal? sigh. Very frustrating. Hope that you get this resolved easily.

I don't have any experience with what you are dealing with, but I came across this company a little while back and it seems like it might be a good fit for people who don't qualify for insurance...at least for basic maintenance. Worth taking a look?

Good luck!
